Horizon Watch: Saltillo, Mexico

A year ago, suppliers to the Ram Heavy Duty pickup in Saltillo, Mexico, were stunned to learn that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles planned to move production to Warren, Mich., where the automaker would spend $1 billion boosting plant capacity. That move came amid a testy political standoff over the North American Free Trade Agreement and signals from the Trump administration that auto industry investment in Mexico could earn Twitter scorn from the White House. A year later, Mexico, Canada and the United States have hammered out a new free-trade deal, and FCA has even bigger plans for boosting U.S. light-truck capacity. Significantly, those plans include leaving the Ram HD in Saltillo and allowing FCA's Mexico suppliers to dodge a bullet on site relocation.
