Car memories are made of this

So what happens to the deeply personal relationships people have with their cars when cars drive themselves ? or if someday cars are merely shared, not owned?

Those are the kinds of ponderous questions about the New Mobility future we like to, well, ponder.

We don't know the answers, of course, but we can now confirm that today people do indeed have intimate relations with their automobiles.

A new survey looking at America's love affair with cars found that 56 percent of owners even go as far as naming their vehicle. One example: Uriah, so named "because it was a heap."

The survey of 2,000 motorists, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Toco Warranty, determined that Americans speak to their cars on average 13 times a week.

Also, 23 percent of vehicle owners said they've felt guilty driving a car that isn't their regular car, and 89 percent said they show their car some form of TLC.

For 55 percent of those, it meant treating their car to a wash or wax.

Two in five car owners say they show affection to their car by never letting its gasoline tank fall below one-fourth.

What causes the cozy connection between owner and car? Sixty percent of respondents felt their vehicle was part of the family, and most of those attributed the bond to the car's reliability, familiarity or memories.

Memories? Digging a little deeper, the survey determined that the average car owner sleeps two and a half nights in their car, eats six entire meals in it and has sex in it three times.
